This very rare hand colored copper engraving is over 350 years old. Various fish are depicted (Asellus, Callarias, Monoceros, Glaucus, Heengus, Mustela etc). Issued in Jon Jonston's Historia Naturalis, published in Amsterdam in 1657. Engraved by Matthäus Merian, a Swiss-born engraver who worked in Frankfurt for most of his career, where he also ran a publishing house. A spectacular, rare find!
