This dramatic military history poster captures one of the most remarkable defensive stands in American frontier history: the Wagon Box Fight of August 1867. Painted by H. Charles McBarron, the preeminent military artist of his generation, the scene depicts thirty soldiers of the 9th Infantry holding off approximately two thousand Sioux warriors near Fort Phil Kearney in Wyoming Territory.
McBarron's meticulous attention to historical accuracy shines through in every detail, from the distinctive blue-gray uniforms to the improvised barricade of dismantled wagon boxes that gave the battle its name. The soldiers' new breech-loading Springfield rifles proved decisive that day, allowing rapid fire that repelled charge after charge.
Part of the official Department of the Army "U.S. Army in Action" series, this poster belonged to a broader educational program designed to dramatize the history and accomplishments of the United States Army from the American Revolution onward. These posters were intended for display throughout Army facilities, including day rooms, clubs, and offices, where they served both an educational and morale-building purpose. By presenting episodes of courage and determination from the Army's past, the series helped familiarize soldiers with the history and traditions of their service.
A compelling piece of mid-century military illustration that bridges American Western history with Cold War-era military education, this poster represents both an important artistic work and a fascinating artifact of how the Army taught its own heritage.
