This magnificent c.1890 stone lithograph was produced by the C. Burckardt printing house in Wissembourg, one of the most collectible and beloved workshops of the late nineteenth century. Known for their oversized carnival and masquerade panels, Burckardt created life-size characters designed to brighten fairs, festivals, and traveling amusements throughout France and Alsace. Their work combined humor, craft, and dazzling hand-applied color, which is why surviving examples remain so treasured today.
The figure here appears as a jovial “Carnival King,” dressed in rich theatrical costume with a fur-lined cloak, jewelled crown, raised goblet, and striped scepter. Burckardt artists delighted in exaggerated proportions and expressive faces, and this panel captures that signature charm. The vibrant palette, heavy outlines, and intricate patterning reflect the workshop’s mastery of multi-stone lithography, a process that required remarkable skill to achieve this level of color layering and detail.
Wissembourg carnival panels are highly sought after because few survived intact. They were used as festive décor, often outdoors, and were rarely stored or preserved with care. This example showcases the full personality of the genre, celebrating the playful world of nineteenth-century European street entertainment and the artistry of one of its greatest print houses. A standout piece for collectors who appreciate early lithographic craftsmanship and whimsical character design.
