1910s

The 1910s were shaped by two forces pulling in opposite directions. The decade opened with Art Nouveau still dominant, its flowing lines and ornamental detail carrying over from the previous century. Then the First World War reorganized everything, including graphic design, as governments and industries turned to bold, direct imagery to communicate at scale. The pieces shown here are period originals from both sides of that divide.
