The beach became a commercial subject in earnest once railways and steamships made coastal resorts accessible to the middle class, roughly the mid-1800s onward. Travel companies, tourism boards, and resort towns all needed imagery that made the shore look like an escape worth booking, and that pressure produced some of the most appealing work in commercial illustration.
