Poland Illustrated Magazine launched in 1954 as a state-published showcase aimed at foreign audiences, and it took its visual identity seriously from the start. The magazine drew on Poland's extraordinary postwar poster tradition, commissioning artists like Jan Lenica, one of the founders of the Polish School of Poster, to produce work that was genuinely ambitious by any international standard.
