Scientific illustration developed as a serious discipline in the 18th and early 19th centuries, when naturalists needed accurate visual records of species being catalogued for the first time. Engravers worked closely with scientists to render anatomy with precision, and hand-coloring added a layer of craft that made the best plates genuinely beautiful objects.
