Leonetto Cappiello arrived in Paris from Italy around 1900 and spent the next four decades reshaping how advertising posters worked. Where earlier designers filled their compositions with painterly detail, Cappiello stripped things down to a single bold figure against a dark background, a formula so effective it became the template for modern commercial art. He is often called the father of modern advertising for exactly that reason. The period originals here span his long career across posters, product labels, and illustration work.
