This stunning 1973 National Geographic supplement captures Mars at a transformative moment in planetary science. Painted by cartographic artist Jay L. Inge using fresh data from the Mariner 9 mission, the map presents four views of the Red Planet: two large hemispheric projections and detailed polar area studies. The deep navy background sets off Mars's ochre and tan surface features with elegant clarity.
The nomenclature section explains how the naming system perpetuates Giovanni Schiaparelli's 1877 classical terminology, with capital letters marking the traditional 'lands' and 'seas' while provisional names in mixed case identify newly discovered topographic features. Surrounding diagrams illustrate Mars's orbital relationship to Earth and comparative planetary data.
Produced at the height of American space exploration enthusiasm, just weeks after Apollo 17's final Moon landing, this map embodies the era's optimism about planetary discovery. A standout piece for collectors of space exploration history, vintage cartography, or mid-century scientific illustration.
