Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau emerged in the 1890s as a deliberate rejection of industrial uniformity, drawing its forms from nature: curving stems, flowing hair, insects, and flowers rendered in sinuous lines and flat, luminous color. It was also a commercial movement, and lithography gave it a mass audience. Alphonse Mucha's work for the Paris print trade showed how far the style could stretch between fine art and advertising. The pieces shown here are period originals from that tradition.
