The circus was one of the great commercial spectacles of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and it needed advertising to match. Lithographers developed some of their most ambitious techniques to capture big cats, acrobats, and clowns in vivid color, often printing at enormous scale to plaster the sides of barns and storefronts weeks before a show arrived in town. The pieces shown here are period originals from that tradition.
