Natural history illustration gave mammals serious attention long before wildlife photography existed. From the early 1800s onward, engravers and lithographers worked from scientific specimens to produce plates that were accurate enough for taxonomy and refined enough for collectors, often hand-colored sheet by sheet. Baron Cuvier's landmark zoological work of the 1830s set a standard that shaped how mammals were depicted in print for generations.
