Sharks have fascinated naturalists and illustrators for centuries, long before they became subjects of popular fear. The most careful depictions came out of the great natural history publishing projects of the 18th and 19th centuries, when engravers and lithographers worked from specimen drawings to produce scientifically serious, visually striking images of species that most people would never see in person. The period originals here come from that tradition of natural history illustration.
