Among the most inventive pieces in the Family Dog series, FD-124-OP-1 breaks the mold, literally! Designed by Patrick Lofthouse, this poster was issued with die-cut figures that could be pushed out of the sheet and set “dancing,” making it the only die-cut poster we’ve seen in the series. It was created for Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, Santana, and Chicago Transit Authority at the Avalon Ballroom, June 28–30, 1968.
Lofthouse’s surreal, cartoon-like figures shimmer under beams of electric pink and blue light, each character designed to spring from the page and transform a flat poster into a living scene. This playful interactivity captures the anarchic, anything-goes spirit of the Avalon and the wider San Francisco counterculture, where art was never just to be looked at, but experienced.
As a first printing, FD-124-OP-1 stands as a rare experiment in concert poster design: a blend of music, humor, and kinetic energy that embodies the psychedelic school of posters at its most imaginative!
