Wine became a serious subject for commercial illustration the moment railways made regional vintages available to city buyers. Producers, regional boards, and eventually restaurants all needed imagery that could sell a lifestyle alongside a bottle. The best work came out of France and Italy in the mid-20th century, where designers treated the label and the poster as equally worthy of craft.
