The 1860s predate commercial poster culture, but they sit at a high point for a different kind of printed image: the natural history plate. Publishers across Britain and Europe were producing hand-colored lithographs and engravings for illustrated encyclopedias and ornithological surveys, where scientific accuracy and visual craft were expected to coexist on the same page. The results hold up as finished works of art. Everything here is a period original from that tradition.
