China's tradition of printed imagery stretches back centuries, but the period most represented in Western collections is the 20th century, when commercial lithography took hold in coastal cities like Shanghai. The posters and graphic work produced there from the 1920s through the 1950s drew on both Chinese painting traditions and European Art Deco, creating a visual style unlike anything produced elsewhere. The pieces shown here are period originals from that lineage.
