Ephemera is the catch-all term for printed material made to be used and thrown away: trade cards, menus, programs, tickets, calendars, advertising cards, and similar paper goods that were never meant to survive. Most didn't, which is what makes period examples worth attention. The ones that did survive offer an unusually candid look at commercial printing and everyday visual culture, free from the self-consciousness of work made for galleries.
