Mary Petty was an American illustrator who spent nearly four decades contributing covers to The New Yorker, from the late 1920s through the 1960s. Her specialty was a particular kind of Edwardian household, populated by imperious dowagers and long-suffering butlers, rendered with a draftsmanship that made the joke land without a caption.
