Zoo

Zoos became major civic institutions in the late 19th century, and by the early 20th they were commissioning some of the most playful commercial artwork around. Animals made natural subjects for bold illustration: recognizable, visually striking, and appealing across ages. European zoos, particularly in Britain and France, were especially active patrons of graphic artists during the interwar years. The pieces shown here are period originals from that tradition.
