“A Production of Surprising Novelties.” This vibrant circa 1920s stone lithograph advertises the theatrical spectacle of William Wallace Lee, known professionally as Wallace the Magician. Active from the early 1910s through the 1950s, Wallace was far more than a stage illusionist. He was a cartoonist, impersonator, and master of “double talk,” blending visual trickery with rapid fire comedic wordplay that made his performances uniquely entertaining.
The poster captures that spirit of abundance and surprise. Wallace stands poised in formal evening dress, dramatically sweeping a bold red cape through the air. From its folds tumbles a cascade of fantastical imagery: rabbits, birds, performers, toys, and comic figures spill outward in theatrical chaos. The composition is classic early twentieth century showmanship, rendered in rich color through traditional stone lithography, with saturated greens and striking reds that command attention from a distance.
Though undated, the printing quality, palette, and illustrative style strongly suggest a 1920s origin at the latest. It is a dynamic example of American magic advertising from the golden age of vaudeville, when illusionists relied on bold graphic imagery to promise spectacle, novelty, and wonder before the curtain ever rose.
