L'Assiette au Beurre was a French satirical weekly published from 1901 to 1912, and it gave artists something rare: full issues devoted to a single illustrator's vision, with no editorial softening of the politics. The targets were the church, the courts, colonial policy, and the wealthy, rendered in bold lithographic color that owed more to fine art than to newspaper cartooning.
