Vaudeville ran as America's dominant popular entertainment from roughly the 1880s through the 1920s, and it needed posters the way it needed stages. Theaters competed for audiences week to week, which pushed printers to produce some of the most vivid commercial lithography of the era: bold color, exaggerated personality, performers made larger than life before they ever walked onstage.
