Aquatic & Beach

The beach and the sea have been reliable subjects for commercial illustration since the late 19th century, when railways and steamship lines needed imagery that could make a destination feel irresistible at a glance. Travel posters led the way, but the subject ran through magazine covers, resort advertising, and sporting prints as well. What drew artists back repeatedly was the light: coastal scenes rewarded bold, flat color in ways that suited lithography particularly well. The pieces shown here are period originals from that tradition.
