Gazette des Beaux-Arts launched in Paris in 1859 as a serious journal of art criticism and history, and it distinguished itself early by commissioning high-quality engravings to accompany its essays. At a time when photography could not yet reproduce well in print, those engravings were how readers encountered paintings, sculptures, and drawings from collections across Europe. The period originals from this tradition are works of craft in their own right.
