Harper's Weekly ran from 1857 to 1916, and at its peak it was the most widely read illustrated journal in the United States. It covered the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Gilded Age through engravings and illustrations commissioned from the best artists of the era, Frederic Remington among them. Remington's work for the magazine helped define how Americans pictured the West and the frontier. The period originals shown here come from that tradition of serious illustrated journalism.
